Ingredient Notes & Substitutions
- Chocolate chips - Milk chocolate chips work great for a classic s'mores flavor, but you can also use semi-sweet, dark chocolate, or a mix.
- Milk - I like adding a few tablespoons of milk when melting the chocolate; it thins it out, giving you a much nicer texture that’s easier to dip into.
- Marshmallows - You can use small or large marshmallows here. Smaller size ones will melt quicker and perhaps more evenly. Larger ones look more impressive. For this specific version, I used jumbo marshmallows which I cut into two halves. You can also use a mixture of white and pink marshmallows for a pop of color.
- For dipping - You gotta have some Graham Crackers, of course, but consider alternatives like apple slices, strawberries, almond biscotti, or pretzels.
- You will also need a heat-proof round dish that can fit inside the air fryer. I used a small round casserole dish; you could also do small ramekins to make individual portions.
Step by Step
1. Melt the chocolate.
- Some recipes skip this step but I found that if you don’t pre-melt the chocolate first and go straight for the air frying, you end up with well-toasted, melted marshmallows but not completely melted chocolate, that’s hard to dip into.
- Add the chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl along with 3-4 tablespoons of milk. Microwave on high for a total of 1 minute but in 20-second increments, stirring the chocolate briefly in between. Then remove the bowl and whisk the mixture until smooth. It may look slightly separated at first, but keep whisking and you will get a lovely, thick smooth chocolate sauce.
- You can also melt the chocolate on low heat on the stovetop.
2. Assemble the dip.
- Add the chocolate sauce to a round, heat-proof ceramic dish (e.g. a casserole or cobbler dish). Make sure the dish fits inside the air fryer. You can also use smaller ramekins.
- If using jumbo marshmallows, cut them in halves. Arrange the marshmallows on top of the chocolate sauce. Don’t press too much.
3. Air fry the dip.
- Preheat your air fryer to 356°F (175°C) for about 3-4 minutes. Carefully place the s’mores dip dish inside the air fryer. I used the Instant Pot Air Fryer, which has a large basket, perfect for this recipe.
- Air fryer for 6 minutes. Ignore the Turn Food alert but do check on the dip at a 5-minute mark. If the marshmallows look well-toasted and golden brown, you can remove the dip.
4. Serve hot.
Once done, remove the dip dish carefully using a towel and place it on a serving platter or cutting board. Serve with your choice of dippers.

Expert Tips
- While some recipes don’t use any milk in the chocolate part, I highly recommend adding it to the melted chocolate chips. Using only melted chocolate chips results in a sauce that’s too thick and difficult to dip and mix with the melted marshmallows.
- If you don’t have a microwave, melt the chocolate in milk on a stovetop on low heat.
- Serve as soon as possible. If the s’mores dip cools down, you can reheat it in the microwave for 1 minute.
FAQs
Traditional s’mores are made with Graham crackers so these are used as dipping crackers with the dip. Dip each cracker into the dip, scooping up a bit of chocolate and one of the marshmallows. It tastes just like s’mores! I also love this dip with fresh strawberries and apple slices. As the dip is quite sweet, it works well with less sweet crackers like almond biscotti or pretzels.
Air fryer s’mores dip is best served fresh but I have had instances when we had leftovers. Simply wrap the dish with some Cling Wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave for about 1-2 minutes. You can also pop it under the grill or in the air fryer for 1-2 minutes to get re-toasted.
Use an oven-safe dish that fits into your air fryer. Ceramic, metal, or glass dishes that are oven-safe will work well.
