Here is why you’ll love this air fryer tortilla garlic bread:

  • It’s crisp yet chewy, cheesy and garlicky, with lots of savory, umami flavors. If you love garlic bread, thin-crust garlic cheese pizza or garlic naan or any kind of garlic and cheese scenario, this tortilla creation is your gem!
  • This garlic tortilla bread is quick, delicious, and versatile. Serve it as a starter for your next Italian-inspired dinner or pair with your favorite Indian curry. Want a quick snack or appetizer? All you need are some tortilla wraps, butter, garlic, cheese, the air fryer and 15 minutes of your time.
  • This is a great way to use up leftover tortilla wraps.
  • You can make a batch ahead of time and store in the refrigerator before cooking.
  • And while it falls in the comfort food category, these tortilla bread are adaptable for high-protein/low-carb diets with the right tortillas and lower-fat cheese.

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

ingredients for air fryer tortilla garlic bread

Tortillas: Wheat tortillas (better texture for garlic bread than corn tortillas but you can try those as well).

Butter Mixture: You can use butter (salted or unsalted), garlic, dried herbs, salt, and pepper.

Cheese: Mozzarella cheese is best but you can try Cheddar or Gruyere cheese as well.

Optional Add-Ins: Chipotle, jalapenos, ketchup, thinly sliced pepperoni, are fabulous as add-ins, according to your taste preferences.

Step by Step

steps how to make tortilla garlic bread air fryer

1. Prep butter mixture

  • Use slightly melted butter (in a microwave or leave it out somewhere warm). Mix with minced garlic, herbs, salt, and pepper. Set aside.

2. Assemble tortillas

  • Brush tortilla with butter, sprinkle with cheese, top with another tortilla. Brush with more butter and sprinkle extra cheese on top. You can make them extra cheesy if you like.

3. Air Fry

  • Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Cook one tortilla sandwich at a time, for 5 minutes for the first one  and 4 minutes for subsequent ones as the air fryer will be quite hot.

4. Serve

  • Remove from the air fryer and cut into quarters. Serve while hot/warm although they taste just as delicious when cooled down.

Expert Tips

air fryer tortilla garlic bread
  • Tortillas: I find that wheat tortillas work better for making garlic bread this way. Corn tortillas don’t have the same chewy texture in my opinion. You are welcome to try and let us know in the comments if the corn tortillas worked well.
  • Make Ahead: Prepare and refrigerate buttered tortillas, then air fry when needed. They should keep for 2-3 days.
  • Variations: Add chipotle or ketchup between tortillas, or thinly sliced pepperoni for a twist. Play around with herbs and spices in the butter mixture. For example, if serving these with Indian curry, you could add turmeric and cumin to the butter; if serving with Tex Mex, add smoked paprika and dried oregano.
  • Make it suit your diet:  Use low-cheese mozzarella for a lighter option. Use high-protein/low-carb tortilla wraps to turn it into post-workout fuel.
  • Serve: Serve as an appetizer, side dish, or snack. Pairs well with Italian dinners, Indian curries, salsa, or at your next BBQ.

I made this for lunch today with low carb tortillas. What a great recipe! I was very lazy about it, just spread a thin layer of butter, then onion and garlic powders, a little s/p and mozzarella. Easy-peasy and delicious! This is a nice crispy addition for my low carb menu, thanks!
